WhatsApp Language Translator: How to Translate Messages and Replies

Need to translate a WhatsApp message into English, Hindi or another language? WhatsApp offers a built-in translation feature on supported devices. You can also use a translation keyboard to write replies in another language.

The best method depends on whether you want to read a message, send a translated reply or prepare a conversation for official use.

How to Translate WhatsApp Messages

To translate an existing WhatsApp message:

  1. Open the conversation and long-press the message.
  2. Select Translate from the available options.
  3. Choose the original and target languages.
  4. Download a language pack if prompted, then view the translation.

The feature works with supported languages in individual and group chats. Availability depends on your device and app version.

Translate WhatsApp Messages on Android and iPhone

Android: Long-press a message and select Translate. Supported versions also allow automatic translation of future incoming messages in a conversation.

iPhone: Long-press the message and choose Translate from the menu, which may appear under More. Select the language you need.

WhatsApp’s translation feature is designed to process translations on your device. Available languages and options can differ between Android and iPhone.

How to Reply to WhatsApp Messages in Another Language

Reading a translated message and composing a translated reply are different tasks.

You can use Google’s Gboard keyboard to translate text while typing:

  1. Open the WhatsApp message field using Gboard.
  2. Select Translate from the keyboard’s tools.
  3. Choose your languages, type your reply and review the translation before sending.

On supported iPhones, Apple’s text translation features may also help you prepare a translated reply.

Always check names, dates and intended meaning before sending important messages.

Why Is the WhatsApp Translate Option Missing?

If you cannot find Translate:

  • Update WhatsApp to the latest available version.
  • Check whether your language pair is supported.
  • Download the required language pack if offered.
  • Check whether the feature is available on your device.

If the option remains unavailable, use a supported translation app or keyboard instead.

Changing WhatsApp’s app language changes menus and interface labels; it does not automatically translate the messages people send you.

Translate WhatsApp Web, Voice Notes and Images

WhatsApp Web: If native message translation is unavailable on your desktop, you can copy selected text into a trusted translation tool. Browser translation may also help with some visible text, but it should not be assumed to translate every chat message correctly.

Voice notes: Audio may need transcription before translation. Automated transcription can misinterpret accents, background noise or mixed languages.

Images: Text inside a photograph or screenshot may require a separate image-text translation tool.

Avoid sharing confidential conversations with unverified browser extensions or third-party websites.

How to Export WhatsApp Chats for Official Translation

Step 1 — Open the conversation. On Android, tap the three-dot menu → More → Export chat. On iPhone, open the chat information and select Export Chat.

Step 2 — Choose the files. Select Without Media for a text-only export. If screenshots, voice notes or attachments are relevant, preserve and share those separately.

Step 3 — Request a quote. Send the selected files, original and target languages, destination country and deadline to Yashvi Translation.

When Do You Need Certified WhatsApp Chat Translation?

If you are submitting WhatsApp conversations for a spouse visa, immigration application, court proceeding or another official purpose, an ordinary in-app translation may not meet the receiving authority’s requirements.

A professionally prepared translation can help the reviewer understand the conversation and compare the translated messages with the originals.

Free WhatsApp Translator vs Professional Human Translation: Which Should You Use?

For everyday conversations, WhatsApp’s built-in translator is often a convenient starting point. But understanding a message and producing an accurate document for someone else to review are different tasks.

Your purpose Recommended approach
Understand a casual message Built-in WhatsApp translation
Reply to someone in another language Translation keyboard, with a quick review
Understand slang or mixed-language expressions Human review when meaning is unclear
Translate business discussions or agreements Professional translation when accuracy is important
Submit chats for immigration or legal purposes Check whether a certified translation is required

Which Languages Can You Translate?

WhatsApp’s built-in language support varies by device and continues to evolve. Common supported languages include English, Hindi, Spanish and Arabic, among others.

For languages or writing styles that are not supported, another translation tool may help.

However, Roman Punjabi, Hinglish, Roman Urdu and mixed-language messages can be harder to translate accurately because the same spelling or expression may carry different meanings depending on the conversation.

Where Automated Translation Can Miss the Meaning

Consider this Roman Punjabi message:

Original: Kal ghar kadon aaoge?

English: When will you come home tomorrow?

The expression includes informal Roman-script spelling that a translation tool may not interpret consistently. A professional translator considers the language, surrounding conversation and intended meaning rather than translating words in isolation.

For an everyday conversation, a small translation error may be inconvenient. For a business agreement or an immigration document, the same error could misrepresent an important statement.

Yashvi’s professional approach: For official chat translations, the original wording is retained alongside the translation where practical. The translator checks meaning in context, while the review process examines names, dates, message order and correspondence with the source.

This is different from simply copying an automated translation into a document.

What Makes a Professional Chat Translation Different?

Yashvi Translation prepares chat translation packages with attention to:

  • Source comparison: Original messages and corresponding translations are presented together where practical.
  • Participant identification: Applicant and sponsor names can be identified separately without changing original WhatsApp nicknames.
  • Dates and conversation order: Relevant timestamps and message sequences are preserved.
  • Mixed-language accuracy: Informal expressions and multilingual messages are reviewed in context.
  • Certification: A Certificate of Translation Accuracy and additional documentation are provided according to the agreed scope and receiving authority’s requirements.

Certification supports the accuracy of the translation. It does not independently prove that the original conversation is authentic or guarantee acceptance by an immigration authority or court.
